Our Expectations ~ Be Safe, Be Kind, Be Ready To Learn
Recently, I introduced our refined school expectations - Be Safe, Be Kind, Be Ready to Learn. This week, I would like to talk about our second expectation and that is Be Safe.
When we unpack this expectation with the students in class we talk about being safe as caring for yourself, other people and the environment and we break it down into the following elements:
- We use technology appropriately
- We move and wait responsibility
- We use equipment safely
- We use strategies to regulate.
Following on from that, when I need to have corrective conversations with students for not following our expectations, I focus on getting them to tell me what they did/ what happened and which of the expectations they relate to…they are already very good at identifying these thanks to their teachers. The next part is getting them to identify if their behaviour followed the expectation or did not follow the expectation. At this point I ask the students what following the expectation looks like and what it doesn’t look like. Most importantly, how they are going to fix their mistake. Finally, we discuss what they feel is an appropriate consequence based on their behaviour and the impact that their actions have had on relationships with others.
I believe that by getting our students to acknowledge their own behaviour, as well as understand that all actions have consequences (good or bad) on relationships, that together we will be able to set them up for success beyond the gates of St Joseph’s. This is an important part of their growth, independence and interpersonal relationships and allows us, the key adults in their lives to slowly step back and allow them to take ownership of their future.
With Christ, we live, love and learn
