Term 3 - Week 5 Principal's Weekly Update
Principal's Weekly Update

Dear Families
It's been another big week at St Joseph’s with our NAIDOC celebrations kicking off on Monday with our NAIDOC Liturgy and concluding on Friday with our NAIDOC Showcase. I would like to thank Julia Kearins, Josephine Filewood and Robyn Chambers for their efforts during the week with coordinating and organising the NAIDOC events.
The daily conversation with children about how their day was at school, can quite often go like this:
Parent: “How was school today?”
Child: “Pretty good”
Parent: “What did you learn today?
Child: “Not much.”
End of conversation, with parents reverting to Seesaw to get a glimpse of what their child did all day.
To get more out of them, try these instead:
“What was the funniest thing that happened today?”
“Tell me one thing you learnt today that you already knew?”
“Tell me one thing you learnt today that you didn’t know before?”
“Tell me something that you learnt today that you wish you didn’t learn?”
These are opening questions designed to catch them off guard and get them to reflect on something that meant something to them and talk about it. Initially it is not going to get to the heart of learning but with persistence, it will send the message that you are interested in their whole day at school and open the door to some very memorable conversations with your children.
PRO TIP: ask the questions in the car, you’ll have a captive audience.

Mercy Bears

St Joseph’s School is joining Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) to bring comfort and joy to those in need. How wonderful does that sound!
We’re hoping that 200 Mercy Bears will be made so we can hand them out to children in Cancer and Hospital Wards, to Centacare, the Queensland Police, the Firies and even Aged Care facilities. To participate, students are invited to purchase one or more $15 Mercy Bear kits as ‘An Act of Kindness’ to others. Mercy Bears will be made in Terms 3 and 4, then gifted at our Christmas Concert.
If you are interested in purchasing a kit:
Fill in either the Trybooking request (please note that this charges a fee), or come into the office and pay by EFTPOS or by Cash
Orders close Friday, August 9
The Mercy Bears will be made at school or OSHC during lunchtimes in Terms 3 and 4. When finished, they will be named by the maker, given hugs and lots of
love, and packed away safely to go to their new home at our end-of-year Christmas Concert.
